Waimea Canyon is Bigger Than Hawaii

This morning we almost cancelled our plans to drive to Waimea based on Michelle still feeling a little woozy from the cruise last night.  Fortunately she insisted that we go.

Waimea Canyon is significantly smaller than the Grand Canyon, but in my opinion it is no less grand.  The views from the roads approaching the canyon were amazing, and the sights from the actual overlook were beyond compare.

Where the Grand Canyon is majestic in browns, reds, and oranges, there is scarcely a color missing from Waimea.  The greens are so vibrant against the red soil and the dark rock, that it is truly amazing.  Because the island is so wet, the clouds hang in the valleys, and you can watch the helicopter tours come and go like mosquitos.

I am incredibly glad we made the trip out and dealt with the crazy windy road up.  Next trip we were keep going and investigate the Cloud Forest in Kokee State Park just to the north.  We felt that everyone had had enough for today.  We drove back down to Waimea, which we think is one of our favorite towns so far on Kauai, and enjoyed lunch.  I had island coconut shrimp from a place thats looks like it belongs back home in Maine selling lobster rolls to locals, and kids had shave ice from Jo Jo’s, an island favorite.

The canyon is breathtaking, and we were incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to look at it in person.  Don’t tell the Grand Canyon, but I think it has some serious competition.
