Watching the Whales Go By

Today was our scheduled down day. And it was great.

Husavik is a large town in Northern Iceland with roughly 3,000 residents. We were happy to join them for a day.  Maybe that’s because at times the city looks, sounds, and smells just like Portland, Maine.

This morning we went out for a whale watching trip with North Sailing on a reconditioned wooden boat. The company has a great reputation as the most ethical company operating. Maybe because they were also the first.

The full body Arctic flotation suits aren’t very comfortable, but they certainly kept us warm. At least there was a redeeming quality.

We were exceptionally fortunate to see quite a few whales and have beautiful weather. At one point were able to watch three humpback whales swimming and diving together. Apparently that is quite rare.

Rather than take pictures, I focused on video for today. A still shot doesn’t do these creatures justice. I posted a sample on Instagram, feel free to look for it there under @waldronba

The rest of the day was spent relaxing. Enjoying some sun. Grabbing provisions in the grocery store. We will be leaving here in the morning to head down to the South Eastern coast. Just the idea is difficult as we have both really grown to love the northern part of Iceland.
