Winding Down

It really hit us today that our trip is nearly over. As we left our sketchy hotel in Southern Iceland we realized we only had a couple of brief stops before being in Reykjavik for two nights. First stop was Skogafoss, one the Southern Coast’s major waterfalls. For some reason these never get old. Unless, like this one they are swarming with people. Still impressive but depressed about sharing, we took a few pictures and moved along.

Next stop was Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, which is one of only a few where you can actually walk behind the falls themselves without putting yourself in a great deal of danger. So of course we had to do that, and it was well worth it. The rush of cold air, overwhelming sound, and raw power is truly something to behold that close.

By then it was lunchtime and that meant Icelandic hot dog. If anyone ever says they are no different than here, slap them. So wrong. They are better in every way. I won’t go into the details for fear of sounding insane, but trust me. Totally better.  The sauces are totally unique and unlike I’ve had here, so no, that isn’t mustard on the top.

Finally we made it into Reykjavik and we immediately missed the wild aspects of the country. In fact, the drive in looked a little too much like any other farmland in the world. Uninspired.

We left our rented apartment and went for a quick walk to see the sculpture walk along the waterfront and took the customary picture of the Viking ship sculpture just as a group of American high school students were arriving.  Where are the abandoned dirt roads of the north when you want them?

Dinner was at a traditional restaurant called Icelandic Fish & Chips founded by one of the city’s most prominent marketing geniuses. Okay, not really, but we did eat there and the food was amazing. We each had wolffish (a truly ugly animal which apparently adopted that characteristic hoping people would learn how delicious it is – FAILED), sea salt wedge chips, and mine was accompanied with tzatziki sauce while Tim opted for malt vinegar. We were both shocked at the quality and truly happy.

On our walk back to the apartment we came across a city square showing the England vs Russia soccer match as part of the Euro Cup. The atmosphere was fantastic so we stayed a bit to soak it all in. I can’t imagine anything like that working in the states.

Today was a great day, even if it was a little sad for us. Tomorrow brings the unique experience of snorkeling in one of the worlds northernmost countries followed by a visits to the famous Blue Lagoon.
