Making Our Way to Isle of Skye

It’s not an easy place to reach. Maybe by helicopter. But otherwise, it’s a challenge.

First was a 4+ hour train ride for Stretch and me. No big deal. I ride backwards and he doesn’t show me his breakfast, simple arrangement and one that for some reason works (in my past I would’ve expected the opposite…). We enjoyed first class on the train for an extra $20 and it came with breakfast and larger seating spaces. Watching the English and Scottish countryside rip by at 130mph wasn’t the most scenic, but no complaints.

Then came the fun part: the rental car. UK is a right drive/wrong side of the road kinda place, and on the windy roads through Scotland that was challenging. We were really careful, and despite the look trepidation on my face below, handled it well. Fortunately we did spend a little to upgrade for a non-manual car. Not because I can’t drive one, but because I’ve never done so with my left hand. We were glad we did. There were no significant issues, but we did see one nasty crash that was a nice reminder to be very careful.

I don’t think the wheel goes on this side…

I will say, as a piece of advice: no matter how hard you try to keep the center of your lane, after 30 years of driving, when you have cars flying at you from the wrong side, it is hard to remember that they’re not doing anything wrong. This is especially difficult when the roads are roughly 1.5 cars wide for a hundred miles. Around twisties, and blind corners, and steep drops to the lochs. This was the Hana Highway from the wrong side and crispier locals. But eventually is started to feel almost normal. Yes, I’m trying to convince myself. But we did make it.

Finally!

Finally, we checked ourselves into our Airbnb for a few days and it is truly stunning. Nicest one I’ve stayed in – with the obvious exception of a certain spot in Kihei. Perfectly finished and we are just the second guests. I’m case anyone is interested, you can find the link here. However, the pictures don’t do it justice. Andrew built it himself and he’s a true craftsman.

Amazing views, until dusk when you’ll only see black flies.

Tomorrow we are off on our first day of hiking. We’ve picked a long one since the weather is supposed to cooperate. Can’t wait to share it tomorrow night.
