Water Everywhere

An early start this morning had us snorkeling at Silfra in Thingvellir National park. The water is exceptionally cold, only a degree or two, as it is runoff from a glacier which is slow filtered along its path. Cold.

But that filtering process has another affect, remarkable clarity. Some of the clearest water in the world – visibility under water up to 150m and only limited because there is no place long enough to test it.

Full equipped in dry suits and having read the caution signs, we went into the water. Truism took photos as my neoprene gloves made my hands like lobsters.

The whole snorkel session lasted about 45 minutes as we passed between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The walls are slowly pulling apart as the earth changes.

At the end we had a cup of hot chocolate, a good laugh with our great guide Eric, and we were off.

On our way out we stopped at a filming location for HBO’s Game of Thrones. We got to see the place where they film seceded regarding the Bloody Gate at the entrance to the Vale. Down in this little rift is the spot. Pretty neat.

This afternoon we went to the famous Blue Lagoon and spent a couple hours relaxing in the mineral water. We reflected on the trip and even started talking about the next one – to Iceland or elsewhere.

We had an amazing time and will be boarding our flights home tomorrow morning.

We are looking forward to seeing our family and friends, but we are very much going to miss Iceland and will be leaving a small piece of ourselves here on the island.
