Aside from walking 7 miles today, it was a pretty low key day.

We spent a lazy day walking some of the central parts of Zurich. Its a much older city than I was a was aware with buildings dating back to the 1500s.

Our first stop was for breakfast, something we haven’t typically done. We found a spot called Franzos right down on the water front. It was a little brisk, but it felt good. We had juice, coffee, pastries, bacon, and eggs. It was great.

Leaving there we did a little souvenir shopping amd acquired Swiss Army knives for the younger two, because why not?

The. Various bridges over the river presented impressive photo opportunities on our way up to Lindenhof Park. An elevated park on the west bank, there is a beautiful view of the downtown and the lake. We sat for a while and took in the day and the view.

Tim went searching for the headstone of a Roman soldier in the second century which is the first known reference to the name Zurich. He spent 10 minutes looking and couldn’t find it. So Michelle found it for him in less than 3 minutes. Made me feel better, she does that to me all the time.

Of course, he was doing that because Chloe and I had started a game of chess at a board in the park. We ended in a draw due to time.

We left the park and went down to Karlstrum, a pillar of Grossmunster open for climbing to a scenic view. Meh. It looked nice, and I’m sure it would’ve been fun, but were done with churches and stairs. So we left.

A quest for public rest rooms led us down to the lakefront, and the views were great. Such a cool city in such an amazing spot is truly unique. The lake is crystal clear and there were a ton of people out there enjoying it at midday on Tuesday. Made me jealous.

We wandered a little more before we wanted to catch a break so we stopped at a supermarket for a snack and headed back to the apartment to catch our breath before dinner.

The consensus was fondue for dinner again, so we headed back to the same place. It was just as good as the night before and we left stuffed.

Back down to the bridges with gelato to watch the fading light of the day.

I think Chloe summed it up best that of all the places we’ve been Zurich has felt the most welcoming, the most lime home. While it looks nothing like Las Vegas, I share her sentiment. There is something about the Scandanavian architecture and influence that makes me feel at home. She started talking about wanting to come back and may even study here. Time will tell.

Tomorrow we’re back on the rails and heading for Paris, our last real stop before going home.

  2. Make sure those Swiss army knives get stowed in your checked bags and aren’t accidentally left in carry on bags—-Elise who has been there and done that
